Et, \u00e0 mesure que ces applications continuent de tirer de plus en plus parti des technologies de calcul haute performance (calcul haute performance) et\/ou d'intelligence artificielle (IA) dans le cadre de leur offre principale, elles commencent \u00e0 n\u00e9cessiter des ressources de calcul \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 \u2013 souvent dans le m\u00eame rack.<\/p>\r\n<p>Cette exigence de proximit\u00e9 a fait passer les densit\u00e9s de racks des niveaux traditionnels de 10 \u00e0 15 kW par rack \u00e0 plus de 100 kW par rack. Ces racks \u00e0 haute densit\u00e9 d\u00e9passent non seulement les capacit\u00e9s des solutions de refroidissement par air conventionnelles dans le centre de donn\u00e9es, mais repoussent \u00e9galement les limites des solutions de refroidissement liquide plus courantes, obligeant les entreprises \u00e0 rechercher des alternatives.<\/p>\r\n<p>Lorsque les densit\u00e9s atteignent ce niveau \u00e9lev\u00e9, cela impose un changement de milieu, de l'air au liquide, ce qui a suscit\u00e9 un regain d'int\u00e9r\u00eat pour une ancienne technologie : le refroidissement par immersion.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Avancement du refroidissement de centre de donn\u00e9es \u00e0 l'aide de liquides<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Au cours des derniers mois, j'ai vu plusieurs articles sur les entreprises hyperscale et les grands g\u00e9ants de l'informatique testant le refroidissement par immersion comme solution potentielle pour leurs centres de donn\u00e9es actuels et futurs. L'une des avanc\u00e9es les plus intrigantes impliquait Microsoft, qui \u00e9tait <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2021\/04\/08\/immersion-cooling-to-offset-data-centers-massive-power-demands-gains-a-big-booster-in-microsoft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">immerger des serveurs dans un liquide de leur propre cr\u00e9ation<\/a>, pour les aider \u00e0 rester au frais.<\/p>\r\n<p>Mais qu'est-ce que le refroidissement par immersion exactement ? Est-ce un moyen viable et \u00e9volutif de refroidir les serveurs ? Et quelles pourraient \u00eatre les r\u00e9percussions d'une adoption g\u00e9n\u00e9ralis\u00e9e du refroidissement par immersion sur l'industrie des centres de donn\u00e9es ? Comme cette technologie est tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressante et semble gagner du terrain, j'ai voulu examiner de plus pr\u00e8s ses origines, son \u00e9tat actuel et son potentiel pour les futures technologies de centres de donn\u00e9es.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Ce qui \u00e9tait ancien redevient nouveau<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Le refroidissement par immersion existe en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 depuis 1985 avec l'av\u00e8nement du <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cray-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Syst\u00e8me informatique Cray-2<\/a>. Bien que le Cray-2 ait \u00e9t\u00e9 un superordinateur incroyable pour son \u00e9poque, il serait impossible de faire fonctionner AWS sur un tel syst\u00e8me. Mais le refroidissement par immersion ne se limitait pas aux superordinateurs \u00e0 l'ancienne. Les entit\u00e9s gouvernementales utilisaient historiquement \u00e9galement le refroidissement par immersion.<\/p>\r\n<p>Beaucoup de ces premi\u00e8res \u00e9tudes de cas de refroidissement par immersion utilisaient des liquides \u00e0 base d'huile, qui \u00e9taient dangereux si consomm\u00e9s, d\u00e9sordonn\u00e9s \u00e0 nettoyer et avaient un impact n\u00e9gatif sur les connexions fibre optique. Cela rendait pratiquement impossible de submerger enti\u00e8rement un ordinateur. <a>\u2013<\/a> quelque chose que les nouvelles it\u00e9rations du refroidissement par immersion cherchent \u00e0 corriger.<\/p>\r\n<p>Aujourd'hui, des solutions arrivent sur le march\u00e9 avec des formulations et des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s chimiques qui les rendent beaucoup plus g\u00e9rables dans le grand public. Ces fluides de conception imitent d\u00e9sormais plus \u00e9troitement l'eau, sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement v\u00e9g\u00e9taliens et n'ont pas de propri\u00e9t\u00e9s r\u00e9f.<\/p>\r\n<p>Et avec ces nouvelles avanc\u00e9es dans les technologies et les fluides de refroidissement par immersion, un regain d'int\u00e9r\u00eat pour ce concept se manifeste dans l'industrie technologique. Et ce, pour de tr\u00e8s bonnes raisons.<\/p>\r\n<p>Les entreprises cherchent continuellement des moyens d'augmenter leurs kilowatts par m\u00e8tre carr\u00e9 dans les centres de donn\u00e9es, tout en essayant d'avoir un impact r\u00e9el sur l'efficacit\u00e9 d'utilisation de l'\u00e9nergie (PUE). Dans les environnements traditionnels refroidis par air, ces deux objectifs sont g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement diam\u00e9tralement oppos\u00e9s. L'une des fa\u00e7ons de concilier ces deux initiatives est l'utilisation du refroidissement liquide.<\/p>\r\n<p>Dans les centres de donn\u00e9es hyperscale et d'entreprise, cela signifiait traditionnellement amener le liquide jusqu'au rack par le biais d'\u00e9changeurs \u00e0 porte arri\u00e8re. Mais m\u00eame cette technologie a ses limites, qui sont d\u00e9sormais mises \u00e0 rude \u00e9preuve par les exigences informatiques du HPC et de l'IA. Afin de repousser encore ces limites, de permettre une densit\u00e9 encore plus grande et de r\u00e9duire la PUE, l'industrie commence \u00e0 amener le liquide directement aux \u00e9changeurs de chaleur sur les puces.<\/p>\r\n<p>La principale diff\u00e9rence entre le refroidissement liquide traditionnel et l'immersion r\u00e9side dans le contact. Les solutions de refroidissement liquide traditionnelles n'exposent pas les composants informatiques directement aux fluides. Cependant, dans une solution de refroidissement par immersion, les racks deviennent des cuves et les ordinateurs sont immerg\u00e9s dans un fluide inerte. Cette substance visqueuse peut \u00e9liminer plus efficacement d'\u00e9normes quantit\u00e9s de chaleur tout en maintenant les PUE juste au-dessus de un.<\/p>\r\n<p>Mais se d\u00e9placer dans cette direction aura des ramifications importantes sur la conception des ordinateurs et les futurs centres de donn\u00e9es qui les h\u00e9bergent.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Un Agent de Changement pour la Conception d'Ordinateurs et de Centres de Donn\u00e9es<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Pour que le refroidissement par immersion soit adopt\u00e9, les concepteurs doivent repenser la mani\u00e8re dont les ordinateurs sont con\u00e7us pour supporter leur submersion dans un r\u00e9servoir horizontal plut\u00f4t que dans un rack vertical. Les ordinateurs traditionnels sont con\u00e7us pour des solutions refroidies par air. Ces appareils utilisent des ventilateurs et d'autres pi\u00e8ces mobiles dans toute la bo\u00eete qui ne fonctionneront pas correctement s'ils sont submerg\u00e9s.<\/p>\r\n<p>En supposant que ces pi\u00e8ces puissent fonctionner dans un fluide, la disposition des ventilateurs oblige les serveurs traditionnels \u00e0 \u00eatre con\u00e7us pour \u00eatre mont\u00e9s en rack et entretenus horizontalement, de l'avant et de l'arri\u00e8re. Le refroidissement par immersion exige que les concepteurs suppriment tous les ventilateurs et pi\u00e8ces mobiles traditionnels et con\u00e7oivent le serveur pour \u00eatre entretenu verticalement, permettant un acc\u00e8s facile \u00e0 tous les composants depuis le bord expos\u00e9 de l'ordinateur. Ce n'est pas un changement majeur, mais un changement n\u00e9cessaire pour que le refroidissement par immersion devienne plus courant.<\/p>\r\n<p>Mais qu'en est-il des centres de donn\u00e9es eux-m\u00eames ? \u00c0 quoi ressemblera un futur centre de donn\u00e9es pour serveurs refroidis par immersion et comment fonctionnera-t-il diff\u00e9remment d'un centre de donn\u00e9es pour serveurs refroidis par air ?<\/p>\r\n<p>Fondamentalement, le refroidissement par immersion change le paradigme du rack traditionnel. Les centres de donn\u00e9es devraient \u00e9voluer des racks verticaux vers des r\u00e9servoirs horizontaux. Les r\u00e9servoirs sont l\u00e9g\u00e8rement plus grands qu'un rack traditionnel, donc l'empreinte au sol changerait naturellement. Heureusement, la plupart des centres de donn\u00e9es sont con\u00e7us avec une construction en dalle, de sorte que structurellement, les b\u00e2timents supporteront ce changement avec tr\u00e8s peu de modifications.<\/p>\r\n<p>L\u00e0 o\u00f9 le changement serait r\u00e9ellement n\u00e9cessaire, c'est dans les syst\u00e8mes m\u00e9caniques et \u00e9lectriques.<\/p>\r\n<p>Avec le refroidissement par immersion, un r\u00e9servoir serait capable de supporter environ cinq fois la puissance\/dissipation thermique par rapport aux racks refroidis par air traditionnels, faisant passer les kW par rack de 20 kW \u00e0 100 kW. Ce changement am\u00e8nerait les futurs fournisseurs de centres de donn\u00e9es \u00e0 \u00e9tudier les moyens d'app.<\/p>\r\n<p>Sur le plan m\u00e9canique, les choses seraient beaucoup plus simples. Les cuves d'immersion sont toutes autonomes, elles n'ont donc besoin que de la plomberie pour assurer l'alimentation en eau et le retour. Cela n\u00e9cessiterait que l'architecture de plomberie fournisse le service d'eau du dernier kilom\u00e8tre aux cuves.<\/p>\r\n<p>La plupart des puissances nominales des r\u00e9servoirs sont bas\u00e9es sur une alimentation en eau \u00e0 temp\u00e9rature ambiante. Ainsi, en th\u00e9orie, le fournisseur du centre de donn\u00e9es pourrait supprimer une grande partie de la capacit\u00e9 du refroidisseur associ\u00e9e aux centres de donn\u00e9es actuels, en supposant que les clients n'ont besoin que des densit\u00e9s annonc\u00e9es. Les solutions d'immersion ont \u00e9galement des puissances nominales bas\u00e9es sur de l'eau glac\u00e9e qui peuvent \u00eatre jusqu'\u00e0 trois fois sup\u00e9rieures au taux de base annonc\u00e9, de sorte que le fournisseur de centre de donn\u00e9es peut vouloir d\u00e9ployer un groupe de refroidissement mais supprimer tous les autres unit\u00e9s de traitement d'air.<\/p>\r\n<p>Si l'immersion prend son essor, les futurs op\u00e9rateurs de centres de donn\u00e9es devront s'adapter \u00e0 une demande accrue d'\u00e9nergie tout en int\u00e9grant des changements dans les installations m\u00e9caniques et des am\u00e9liorations dans la plomberie de l'\u00e9tage.<\/p>\r\n<p>Le refroidissement par immersion est-il une option r\u00e9alisable pour les entreprises \u00e0 la recherche d'une densit\u00e9 et d<br \/><br \/><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Les fabricants et leur capacit\u00e9 \u00e0 produire en masse des serveurs \u201c compatibles avec le refroidissement par immersion \u201d<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li>Les fournisseurs de centres de donn\u00e9es actuels et futurs, ainsi que leur flexibilit\u00e9 et leur volont\u00e9 d'apporter les modifications m\u00e9caniques et \u00e9lectriques n\u00e9cessaires pour optimiser leurs installations pour le refroidissement par immersion.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li>Les exigences des hyperscalers et des entreprises informatiques, ainsi que leur d\u00e9pendance croissante \u00e0 l'\u00e9gard du HPC et de l'IA.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quoi qu'il en soit, Vantage continuera de suivre de pr\u00e8s les d\u00e9veloppements int\u00e9ressants de cette vieille technologie et se r\u00e9jouit \u00e0 l'id\u00e9e de collaborer avec ses clients pour d\u00e9terminer si le refroidissement par immersion est la meilleure solution pour leurs centres de donn\u00e9es et leurs besoins informatiques.<\/p>\r\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today\u2019s applications and network-enabled systems require an immense amount of computing power.
