The data center industry continues to experience incredible growth driven by the ongoing emergence and adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud technologies. In fact, according to the 2026 Global Data Center Outlook published by JLL, a leading global commercial real estate services and investment management company, “Nearly 100 gigawatts (GW) of new data centers will be added between 2026 and 2030, doubling global capacity.”
Companies around the world and across industries are racing to adopt AI tools and capabilities that boost productivity and increase operational efficiency. Meeting this demand requires massive computing power and a huge upswing in the construction of the hyperscale data centers that deliver it. Unfortunately, construction is an inherently dangerous occupation, made even more so by the increased pressure to build quickly, which this new surge in data center demand has created.
Vantage Data Centers is leading the charge to ensure that all construction, operations and other employees who leave for work in a data center or on a data center construction site in the morning return home safely to their families that evening. According to Trey Dean, senior vice president of environmental, health and safety, global at Vantage, this commitment to employee safety led to the launch of the company’s aggressive Vision Zero health and safety campaign, which aims to eliminate environmental, health and safety incidents across its construction sites and data centers.
“Without safety, nothing else matters,” said Dean. “Building an elite safety culture means raising the standard far beyond mere compliance with OSHA standards. It requires relentlessly pursuing zero harm and working across teams and organizations to ensure every person succeeds in reaching it.”
Since the launch of Vision Zero, Vantage has taken incredible steps toward that goal—implementing programs and procedures designed to improve employee physical and mental well-being and make Vantage a safe place to work for everyone. It’s an initiative that involves the entire company, including senior executives who are championing and advancing safety initiatives in every facet of the organization.
“Leaders must model and champion safety visibly, not manage it from a distance,” Dean explained. “Employees need to feel empowered to act immediately when they see risks, knowing they have the full support of their organization and leaders.”
Expanding Vision Zero Industry-wide
Creating a safety-first culture is an ongoing journey for the entire construction industry. To unite our peers and share best practices around employee health, safety and well-being, Vantage introduced the Safety Summit last year.
Vantage’s Safety Summit 2025 was a single-day event that brought together industry leaders, safety professionals and key stakeholders to discuss best practices, innovations and strategies for maintaining an elite safety culture. Designed to champion and advance employee safety and well-being, the event was a significant step towards expanding Vantage’s Vision Zero across the industry.
“… true safety excellence cannot be achieved in isolation. It demands deep, mutual collaboration across all teams, trades and leadership levels,” said Dean. “Our goal [with Safety Summit 2025] was to reinforce the idea that every interaction, every partnership and every decision plays a critical role in protecting people.”
Safety Summit 2025 attracted more than 300 attendees, who participated in expert-led sessions, interactive panels and networking opportunities designed to enhance collaboration and support employee well-being. These sessions provided attendees with valuable insights into safety protocols, risk management and emerging safety trends while connecting them with peers and industry experts.
Safety Summit 2025 was such a success that Vantage is bringing its Safety Summit back, bigger and better, in 2026.
This year’s Safety Summit 2026, to be held on May 21, will focus on health and safety as the “Everest” of the data center industry and is expected to attract hundreds of attendees. The event, which the company hopes will help to forge a new era of safety across the construction industry, will look to the future of construction and operations and explore how new technologies and tools will reshape health and safety procedures and policies across the data center industry.
This year, attendees will experience:
- Presentations on innovative, cutting-edge AI technologies and how they can be leveraged to enhance safety support and track essential safety data.
- Demonstrations of how advanced robotics and exoskeleton technologies can improve worker safety and help eliminate the risk from high-risk jobs and activities.
- Discussions on improving teamwork and building communication skills to help keep the collective team safe and secure.
- Industrywide forums on fundamental changes that can be made to policies and procedures to better protect employees.
- A special address by Leif Babin, president and co-founder of Echelon Front, discussing the dichotomy of leadership in the field of safety.
“The future of safety in our industry must be proactive, personal and embedded into every level of decision-making,” said Dean. “The next frontier isn’t just about eliminating hazards; it’s about eliminating the conditions that allow unsafe behaviors or environments to persist, whether they are physical, mental or organizational.”
For employees to truly be safe and secure on the job, all partner organizations, vendors and data center customers need to share the same dedication and commitment to an incident-free workplace. This requirement is expanding as the data center industry grows.
When it comes to the health and safety of workers in data centers and construction sites, bare minimum safety standards are simply not enough. Safety Summit 2026 will carry the torch from last year’s inaugural event as an essential tool for ensuring collaboration and cooperation across the industry as it works toward a higher standard of workplace safety.
